Conceived to comply with 1993 Group A international rallying regulations (minimum production of 2,500), the RS Cosworth was the first mass produced car with front and rear downforce aerodynamics. Using a modestly uprated Cosworth Ford YBT engine power output peaked at 227bhp, fractionally more than the legendary RS500.

Classic Jaguar XJ220

What is your favourite car of all time?

Jaguar XJ220 1988, 1992, 1993, 1994

The original XJ220 first appeared at the British Motor Show in 1988 and created such an overwhelming response that it was decided to put a form of the car into production. Between the car's show debut and the production XJ220 in 1992, the concept had changed from that of a four-wheel-drive V12-engined car to a two-wheel-drive twin-turbo V6, but the result was still the fastest production sports-car in the world with a top speed of 208mph. Fitted with a V6, quad-cam, 24-valve, twin-turbo engine the "big cat" is capable of 0-60mph in just 3.8 seconds and 100mph in only 7.3 seconds. Maximum power is quoted at 542bhp at 7000rpm and 475lb ft of torque at 4500rpm.

Jaguar Sovereign XJ40 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994

Jaguar started planning the XJ6's replacement in 1972, but neglect under British Leyland delayed its launch until 1986. Still unmistakeably Jaguar, but with AJ6 all-aluminium engine (which started as half of the V12), five-speed Getrag manual or four-speed ZF auto gearbox and new rear suspension with outboard brakes, it rode and handled better than ever and was much more economical. Sold as XJ6, Jaguar Sovereign or Daimler (3,6 auto only), the XJ40 was right for the time.

The 18-year-old XJ6 was replaced by a new saloon (coded XJ40) of the same name in 1986. Visually related to its distinguished predecessor, it benefited from improved aerodynamics and was significantly lighter. The low volume XJ12 excepted, the new XJ was the first Jaguar saloon since 1950 not to be powered by the legendary XK engine. Available in single-cam 2.9 litre or a more refined twin-overhead camshaft, 24-valve, 3.6 litre form this second generation XJ6 was produced in 1994.

Porsche 993 Turbo 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997

Porsche 993 Turbo

What is your favourite car of all time?

Porsche 993 Turbo 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997

The 993-bodied car was introduced in December 1993 as the fourth generation of the 911, and it made striking improvements in three most important areas - looks, power and handling. Fitted with a 272bhp, 3.6-litre engine and multi-link rear suspension, top speed rose by 6mph over the 964 to 168mph/270kmh with 0-60mph/0-96kmh at 5.6secs. The styling of the 993 was stunning and for many observers this was the most beautiful of all 911s. With its flared wheel arches, large diameter 17-in (or larger) alloy road wheels and flush headlamp lenses, the Porsche design team had created a car that equalled, and surpassed, the most evocative designs from the Italian styling houses. The 400bhp 993 Turbo was the ultimate extension of the 911 design.

Defender 90 Land Rover County Station Wagon 1992, 1993, 1994

Defender 90 (County Station Wagon) 1992, 1993, 1994

Defender 90 County Station Wagon 1992, 1993, 1994

During the first few years of Defender production the vehicles specification changed only in small details. Most notable was the improved LT77S gearbox for the 1992 models and the June 1993 introduction of rear discs, replacing drums that had been used for all previous coil-sprung Land Rovers. At the same time the front discs on One Tens, and Nineties with the High Load Suspension option became ventilated. From March 1994, the 200Tdi engine was replaced by the quieter 300Tdi type, now coming in full 111bhp Discovery tune.

Defender 110 Land Rover (County Station Wagon) 1990, 1994, 1995

What is your favorite Land Rover of all time?

Defender 110 County Station Wagon 1990, 1994, 1995

In 1990, the Ninety and the One Ten were replaced by the Defender 90 and 110, which were simply evolutionary models wearing new badging. The key change that came with the Defenders was that the old turbo-diesel engine was replaced by a de-tuned version of the 200 Tdi turbo-diesel from the Discovery. The V8 remained available, and until 1994 so did the four-cylinder petrol. From 1995. however, all Defenders for the British market had Tdi engines unless to special order.
